Case study – Demo4
Our Demo4 magnet system is the next key step on our pathway to clean, secure and affordable fusion energy.
Demo4 is a complete balanced set of HTS magnets in a tokamak configuration, comprising 44 individual HTS coils assembled into 14 toroidal field (TF) limbs and two poloidal field (PF) coils, forming a spherical tokamak (ST) cage magnet structure with stored energy of over 16 MJ.
In the design and build of Demo4, we have developed expertise in coil winding, manufacturing and tooling for large-scale magnet systems. Operation will allow us to test and validate our HTS magnets in fusion power plant relevant scenarios for the first time.
Our partnerships
Collaboration and partnership will be vital to achieving our mission. We have built a strong network of government, commercial, scientific and academic partners which significantly strengthens our capability to commercialise HTS magnets.

General Atomics
We’ve signed a memorandum of understanding with US-headquartered General Atomics (GA) to collaborate in HTS technology for fusion energy and other industry applications, leveraging GA’s world-leading capabilities for manufacturing large-scale magnet systems and Tokamak Energy’s pioneering expertise in HTS magnet technologies.

Furukawa Electric Group
We have a partnership agreement with Furukawa Electric Group, a leading global supplier, for the provision of specialist HTS tape. Building relationships like this with major global companies significantly strengthens our capability to commercialise our HTS magnet technology.

Sandia National Laboratories (SNL)
We are working with the scientists at SNL to conduct in-situ tests of HTS tapes in near-operation conditions under photon radiation, at the SNL Gamma Irradiation Facility. This allows us to test HTS magnet durability and performance when exposed to gamma radiation as we scale up our operations towards commercial fusion.
